It takes real courage to get in touch and arrange your first appointment.

We understand that.

We also understand how a first counselling session can bring out many feelings such as nerves, anxiety, fear and excitement. How does it work and what will my counsellor be like?

Once you’ve made contact we’ll discuss how we’re going to hold our counselling sessions together. This may be face to face, online via video chat, over the phone or through our walking therapy service

We’ll use the first session so we can get to know you a little better and address any initial concerns which you may have about therapy. We’ll also give you some information about the counselling contract which explains important information such as confidentiality and the number of sessions you may wish to have.

We can then start looking at the reasons why you have come to therapy and begin to hear your story. We appreciate that entrusting yourself and your personal thoughts to someone unknown can feel like a real leap of faith so we go at a pace which suits you. Before the first session ends we can reflect on how you’ve found the first experience.

If you feel that further sessions would be helpful and we both feel we could work together then we can choose to book some more appointments. If you need more time, or feel you feel that you would like a different therapist, then that's no problem.
